Learn to pose: 10 easy tips to look better in pictures!

Hey guys, did you miss me? ๐Ÿ™‚ I was super busy recently, but you can always check what I’m up to on my Instagram. And speaking of instagram, I get asked a lot how I get such good photos, what camera am I using, who is taking my pictures and so on, so I’ve decided to write a post about it and give you a few tips to look better in pictures.

First of all, I am not a model, nor do I have any model experience. I mean come on, I am 161cm short ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve just worked on it, practiced a lot in front the mirror and most importantly I enjoy being in front of the camera. Like you could see on my blog and social media, that didn’t happened overnight and I was getting better and better with each photoshoot and hopefully will continue improving ๐Ÿ™‚

These 10 tips I am going to share with you are some things I found to be working almost every time and that help me to look better in pictures ๐Ÿ™‚

How to look better in pictures

Being confident is easier said then done for most people but I believe it is the most important thing when stepping in front of the the camera. Most of my photoshoots are done outside in public areas, and there are always people staring or walking by, but that never bothers me, because I am there to do my job and in order to get good photos I need to be professional.

Any lack of confidence will be reflected on the picture and you’ll not be 100% satisfied with it. You need to feel good in your own skin and in the clothes you are wearing for the photoshoot. If high heels make you uncomfortable, simply don’t wear them ๐Ÿ™‚ I can ramble on and on how to achieve that, but bottom line is you need to work on yourself, both physically and mentally. We are all different and we all have different goals in life, so it’s not a single man recipe, you have to get to know yourself and understand what you really want. And yes, it takes time and lot of effort, but it’s all worth it once you get in front of your mirror and love what you see.

Just the fact that you strongly decided to do that will give you the boost of confidence for your pics in the meantime ๐Ÿ™‚ Also being in a mood for taking photos is also quite important. When you are having a bad day, it’s better to postpone your photoshoot because you’ll need to take like million photos to get one right. It’s a waste of time and energy.

How to look better in picturesLighting was the thing I’ve struggled the most in the beginning because I didn’t think about where the light is coming from and how to use it in my advantage to make my picture look exactly as I wanted to.

I prefer daylight to studio lights, because you are able to play with the rays of sunlight and make them lighten the areas where you want to shine while being able to make a shadow where you need to. You never want your face to be directly exposed to sunlight because you’ll just turn up too shiny and white on pictures and your features will not be shown. That’s why I either stand in shadow or just turn my head away from the source of light like in this pic and let my hair soak up all that shine while my face can still be visible ๐Ÿ™‚

Every location is different and and that’s why before you start posing and taking pictures, take a moment to see where the light is coming from. Once you start doing that you’ll see a major difference in your pics ๐Ÿ™‚ This is really a wide topic so if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask me here in the comments or on social media ๐Ÿ™‚

First of all, take your time when doing makeup for photos. It doesn’t matter what makeup look you choose, that’s up to you, but make sure everything is blended nicely, otherwise your face will just look weird on photos. When setting your face, I recommend using a translucent powder, because powder with some color in it will show up in photos and you risk of looking unnatural, especially if you are using a flash. For me blush is a must because just by adding little color to your cheeks you look better in pictures, more healthy and not too pale. Also, I always contour my cheek bones, forehead and jaw line. And the hardest part of all is not

going overboard with highligher. I know it’s hard since we all love that disco ball effect, but in pictures, soft glow will just give you a better overall natural look, especially when using studio lights. When it comes to hair, I personally love straight hair, but honestly it gives me a hard time to make a good picture. But when having some volume and dimension in my hair it always helps me to look better in pictures. Don’t be afraid to play with you hair when taking photos, change it up, switch from one side to another, hair captured in motion usually turns out to be a great picture ๐Ÿ™‚

Like I said before, the most important thing when choosing your outfit for photos is to choose something that you feel comfortable in and that makes you feel good. Because that will show up on photos! Once you’ve chose the outfit, style it. Add some accessories, make the clothes work for you, be creative and playful, that’s why fashion is there, to have fun with it and experiment.

Having an entire outfit in one color is usually not a good idea, it will just look plain and boring in photos. If you are wearing all black outfit for example,ย accessorize it with some color to complete the look, it will give vibrance to the photo and instead of looking boring with few small details you’ll look stylish. In this photo I was going for the monochrome look and it paring black with white and gray I got a very effective and elegant look without much effort ๐Ÿ™‚

Not SponsoredFinding your perfect angle can be an issue. But the good thing is that we all have multiple ๐Ÿ™‚ Of course it is easier when you are taking a selfie and you can see on your phone exactly how the pic will turn out and be able to turn your phone and face until you find that perfect angle. But when posing for a photographer and there is not a mirror anywhere near you, it can be problematic if don’t know your good sides. Best tip I can give you is to practice at home.

Every time you do your makeup or hair, play around and practice in front of the mirror. Make different facial expressions, move your head and body to find the angles that look the best and of course it’s good to know your bad sides as well….to avoid them ๐Ÿ™‚

Another tip that works for me is not to look directly into the camera lens when taking full/half body pictures. Some of my best photos are the ones where I look slightly to side, over the shoulder of the photographer.

In the following two paragraphs I’ll give you some example poses for full body photos and same tips focusing on the face.

6. BODYย

In the first picture, I used the wind to my advantage, facing directly to it so my hair would get that blowing effect. By taking a wider stand and slightly putting my upper body forward while my chin is high and turned bit to the side andย neck long and exposed, it turned up to be a fierce pose.

In the second picture I used the classic celebrity trick to get that hourglass figure. Turing the upper body to one side (see the shoulders) and head to another while my legs are facing forward led to my booty looked bigger, waist smaller and hands proportional, that’s what we all want, right?

7. FACEย

When it comes to posing, your eyes are what tells the story. Full body pic, upper body shot or just a selfie, it makes no difference, if you are not wearing sunglasses (or like in second picture even if you do) your eyes are the star of the show. They have to be wide open and bright and stand out in every shot. Brows are important too, because they frame the eyes, so if they look good you will instantly look better in pictures. Also for closeup pics, go light with makeup, it will look more natural in pics ๐Ÿ™‚ Don’t be afraid to smile, not just with you lips, but with eyes as well ๐Ÿ™‚ That practicing in front of mirror I keep mentioning will once again be of use here. You need to be able to transfer an emotion through your face to the picture. And that’s not as easy as it sounds. When taking closeup photos, unlike full body pictures, I prefer to look directly into the camera because it gives a certain dept to the photo.

Props are always a good idea, and they make the picture to look more fun. You can use whatever as props, depending on what story you are trying to tell. Baloons, flowers, books, food and drinks, makeup products etc…..

Once you’ve chosen your prop, try incorporating it in different ways into the scene to get the effect you want. They are also a good source of color to you shot if your outfit is plain. Props are simple but highly effective way to spice up your photo and make it stand out and they will help you to look better in pictures ๐Ÿ™‚

Well, this one is self-explanatory, but I had to mention it ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s quite simple, the more pictures you take, the higher chance you have to get more good ones ๐Ÿ™‚

And last, but not least, don’t forget to HAVE FUN! With every picture you take you are creating a memory, a story to share with others. In today’s digital world, pictures are a great way to share positive thoughts all across the world, to spread motivation and to inspire other people as well.ย  We are all beautiful because we are all unique. Don’t be afraid to stand in front of the camera and enjoy that moment, because with each picture you are contributing the beauty of world ๐Ÿ™‚
